The roots of Park Road go back to the purchase in 1999 by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh of the government-owned National Film Unit. This august institution was formed in 1941 as New Zealand’s first post production facility and over the years it built an outstanding reputation nationally and internationally for work of the highest quality. In 2005, following the building of a new state-of-the-art facility in Miramar, it was renamed Park Road.
Archives New Zealand has over 100 film clips from the core National Film Unit collection available to view online at http://www.audiovisual.archives.govt.nz. Archives New Zealand hold around 21000 reels of film and 1000 videotapes. The majority of these are from the New Zealand National Film Unit which made Government funded films from 1942 until 1989.
